I am a 'boomer' who teaches pupils in a UK school how to make safe and appropriate use of generative AI, empowering them with greater agency over their learning. Generative AI is a game-changer in how we teach and how pupils learn.

Currently, I am running action research projects for ‘Teach the Teacher’ —desperately in need of funding to continue—in The Gambia and Lesotho, two African countries whose education systems are severely impacted by economic disadvantages. These projects aim to explore the potential of generative AI to help level the educational playing field between school pupils in the affluent Global North and those in these regions.

However, we must first acknowledge a critical barrier: the global digital divide is most extreme in countries like these. The vast majority of pupils lack access to computers at school or home. Even when they have internet-connected devices, there is often no reliable network to connect to, or the cost of data is prohibitive. As it stands, the use of AI is out of reach in places where it could have the most profound impact.

If you’d like to learn more about our research—or better yet, if you can point me toward potential funding opportunities—please don’t hesitate to email me (hastklass@gmail.com).
